Checked against Meta’s own announcements, help pages and developer documentation on 17 September 2026. Meta is still rolling this product out, so some details may change.
If you use the WhatsApp Business app, you may have seen a new screen from Meta: “Get an AI agent that helps customers 24/7”, followed by “Save time with an AI agent that answers chats while you work or sleep.”
That screen is for Meta Business Agent, the AI agent Meta opened to businesses of all sizes on 3 June 2026 at its Conversations event in London. If you answer “how much?” and “open today?” dozens of times a day, the appeal is obvious. The harder questions are practical: what does it actually do, can your business use it yet, what does it cost, and how is it different from a dedicated WhatsApp AI assistant?
- What it is: Meta’s own AI agent that replies to customer chats for a business, set up from the Tools tab of the WhatsApp Business app, or through Meta’s APIs for larger businesses.
- What it does: answers questions on hours, location, products, prices, discounts, payment and delivery; recommends products; collects customer details; hands chats to you.
- Malaysia: not confirmed. WhatsApp’s Help Center says it is “only available in limited countries to select businesses”, and Meta publishes no country list.
- Bahasa Malaysia: not confirmed in any Meta source. Test it with real customer messages first.
- Cost: free to start in the app; since 15 September 2026, Meta One business plans from US$14.99 a month add more access. On the developer platform, US$2 per million tokens, about 4–5 US cents a message by Meta’s estimate.
This guide answers those questions from Meta’s own sources, and says plainly where Meta has not published an answer.

What is Meta Business Agent?
Meta Business Agent is an AI service from Meta that replies to customer chats on a business’s behalf, using what it has learned about that business. Meta describes it as “AI that lets every business show up for every customer as if they had an infinite team behind them.” WhatsApp’s Help Center puts it more plainly: “an artificial intelligence (AI) service from Meta for businesses.”
In practice, you switch it on, it learns about your business, and it replies to customers for you. You can step in whenever you want. It comes in two forms:
| Version | Who it suits | How it is set up |
|---|---|---|
| In the WhatsApp Business app | Small businesses that run WhatsApp from a phone | In the app’s Tools tab. Meta says it takes minutes and needs no coding |
| Meta Business Agent Platform | Larger businesses with developers | Through the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), with APIs that connect the business’s own systems |
It also works on Messenger, Meta is expanding it to Instagram, and it can reply in chats that start from a business’s Facebook or Instagram ads. This guide focuses on WhatsApp.
When Meta announced the wider launch, it said “more than one million businesses are already using a Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger.”

What can Meta Business Agent actually do?
It answers routine customer questions, recommends products, collects customer details and hands chats to you, based on the information you or your customers provide. WhatsApp’s Help Center lists the chat capabilities; Meta’s June announcement adds a few more. The table keeps the two apart.
| Capability | Meta Business Agent | Availability and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic business questions | Yes: “business hours or location” | Listed in the WhatsApp Help Center |
| Product and service questions | Yes | Listed in the WhatsApp Help Center |
| Prices | Yes: “details about pricing” | Only as accurate as the information you give it |
| Discounts, payment and delivery | Answers questions about them | The app’s help pages describe answering these questions, not processing payments |
| Product recommendations | Yes, “from a business catalog” | Works best with a catalogue set up |
| Leads | Yes: an “Ask for customer info” setting collects details, and you are notified when a customer replies | Setting in the app |
| Appointment booking | Listed in Meta’s announcement | The Help Center has a guide to connecting Google Calendar. On the Platform, booking works by connecting the business’s own systems |
| “Close sales” | Listed in Meta’s announcement | The app’s help pages do not explain how. On the Platform, connections to your own systems can take actions such as “confirming a payment” |
| Handing chats to you | Yes | App: an AI handoff list, notifications, and topics you tell it to always transfer. Platform: automatic handoff when confidence is low or a customer asks for a person |
| Morning briefing of missed chats | Being tested | Meta says it is “starting with a select number of businesses” |
Meta adds its own caveat: “Some Meta Business Agent features may not yet be available to all eligible businesses.”
Where it gets its knowledge
In the app, the agent learns from your Facebook Page, your past WhatsApp chats and your website. You can add a catalogue, price lists, documents, images and example answers. It also learns from replies you type yourself: when you answer a customer manually, the agent “may save messages that contain new information about your business,” and you can review or delete what it saved.
Five things to know before switching it on in the app
These come from WhatsApp’s own Help Center. They are not criticisms, just details that matter to a business that already runs on WhatsApp.
- Greeting and away messages are turned off. WhatsApp says they “interfere with the AI’s ability to handle incoming messages.” To use them again, you have to delete the agent.
- Some app features may stop working. It “may impede” broadcast lists and disappearing messages.
- Linked devices are disconnected. You can re-link most of them afterwards, but not WhatsApp for Windows, Android tablets or WearOS.
- Customers are told. WhatsApp lets customers know when a business has AI connected, and shows them: “AI from Meta receives chats to improve AI quality and generate messages for this business.” Meta says messages in chats where the agent is connected are collected to improve AI at Meta, even while the agent is muted, until you delete it.
- It can be wrong. In Meta’s own words: “AI-generated messages may not be accurate or appropriate.” That is true of every AI system, including ours.
For businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform
According to Meta’s developer documentation, a phone number is eligible only if it is:
- managed through the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), not the WhatsApp Business app
- in a supported business category. All categories are supported “except Finance, Government, Health, Alcohol, Gambling, over-the-counter drugs, and matrimony services”
- in good standing, from a business “based in a country authorized for Meta Business Agent”, and meets Meta’s “business trust and verification requirements”
- not already running a “conflicting messaging product”. Meta says “a single number can’t run more than one.”
Platform businesses give the agent knowledge through APIs (business information, FAQs, files and websites) and can connect it to their own systems. They can set spending limits measured in tokens or AI turns, and send free test messages before going live.

Is Meta Business Agent available in Malaysia, and what does it cost?
Short answer: Meta has not confirmed Malaysia or Bahasa Malaysia in any source we found. It is free to start, and paid Meta One business plans now add more access. Here is what each Meta source actually says.
Availability
- Meta’s June announcement: “We’re now expanding our Business Agent to businesses of all sizes globally.”
- WhatsApp’s Help Center: “This feature is currently only available in limited countries to select businesses. It might not be available to you yet.” It links to a waitlist.
- WhatsApp Business product page: “Available to eligible businesses in select markets, with additional markets launching soon.”
We found no country list in the Meta pages we checked, so we cannot confirm that every Malaysian business can use it today. The practical test takes ten seconds: open the Tools tab in your WhatsApp Business app. If the AI agent option is there, Meta is offering it to your account. If it is not, Meta’s waitlist is the next step.
For clinics and other health businesses: Meta’s developer documentation lists Health among the business categories not supported on the Platform version. The app help pages we read do not list excluded categories, so check in the app itself.
Languages
WhatsApp’s Help Center says: “At this time, not all languages are supported. The language that Meta Business Agent uses is determined by your business’s phone number.” Meta’s developer documentation for the Platform version says the agent detects the language of each customer message and replies in the same language, and that “English has the strongest response quality.”
We could not find Meta confirming Bahasa Malaysia, or mixed BM-English messages, in any source we checked. If your customers write “boss, ada stock tak? harga berapa?”, test the agent with real messages like that before relying on it.
Price
- June 2026: “Getting started is free. In the coming months, businesses will access the agent through paid subscription offerings.”
- 15 September 2026: Meta announced Meta One, which includes business plans. Essential, “starting at $14.99/mo”, includes “more access to Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp.” Advanced, from US$49.99 a month, adds “even more Meta Business Agent responses.” Expert (from US$149) and Max (from US$499) have the highest capacity.
- Meta also says: “Plans, benefits, pricing, and availability may vary by region, by app, and by account.” We found no Malaysian ringgit prices in Meta’s announcement.
- On the WhatsApp Business Platform (the developer version), Meta has charged per token for Business Agent messages since 1 August 2026: “One global rate of $2.00 USD per 1 million (M) tokens.” Meta adds that one message “typically consumes 20,000–25,000 tokens”, about 4–5 US cents per message.
One more date worth knowing, whichever tool you use. On the Platform, replies written by a person or by a third-party AI count as “service messages”, which Meta has not charged for since November 2024. Meta says that from 1 October 2026 it “will charge on a per-message basis for all service messages”, at rates set by market.
Our view: “free to start” and “paid plans for more access” sit side by side. How much free use a small business gets before a plan is needed is not something we found published, so check inside your own app before planning around it.

Why Meta is bringing AI agents into business messaging
For most Malaysian SMEs, WhatsApp customer service has always worked like this: customer sends a message → someone in the business replies, eventually. Meta is building toward a different shape: customer sends a message → AI handles the routine part → a person steps in when needed.
Meta’s own reasoning is simple. Its WhatsApp Business blog says “Customers expect instant responses, but no team can be everywhere at once,” and Meta counts “more than one billion active threads with businesses on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram every day.” It is also working on discovery: Meta says people will soon be able to find businesses powered by a Business Agent by typing the business’s name into WhatsApp’s search bar.
Our view: three things explain the timing.
- The conversation is already on WhatsApp. Building AI into the app removes the setup step that kept most small businesses from automating.
- Subscriptions give Meta a way to charge small businesses that were never going to pay per message on the API.
- Meta’s ambitions go beyond replies. It says it wants the agent to eventually “help fully run all your daily operations — like conducting market research, surfacing product insights, connecting with the tools to manage your calendar and providing competitive intelligence.” Those are Meta’s stated plans, not current features.

What this means for Malaysian SMEs
Whichever tool you use, AI in customer chats changes the day-to-day work in fairly predictable ways.
After-hours enquiries stop waiting until morning
A customer who messages at 11pm about a car part, a tuition slot or a catering order often messages three businesses at once, and the first useful reply tends to win. An assistant that replies straight away, even if all it can say is “we’ll confirm your quote at 9am”, keeps you in that race. More on this in what happens to enquiries after closing time.
The same ten questions get answered without you
Price, opening hours, location, parking, delivery areas, what a service includes. For most shops these make up a large share of daily messages, and they are exactly what AI handles well, as long as it has the right information.
Price questions carry the most risk
The danger is not a slow reply. It is a confident wrong one. An AI quoting last month’s price, or a promotion that has ended, creates an argument at the counter. Whatever you use, keep one up-to-date source for prices, and update it the same day things change.
“Got stock?” needs live information
An AI can only confirm stock if it has current stock information, and a catalogue uploaded last week is not that. For most small shops without a connected inventory system, the honest answer is “let me check and get back to you”, and a well-built assistant should say exactly that instead of guessing.
Leads arrive with the details already collected
Instead of “hi, how much?” and nothing else, AI can ask for the details you need: area, vehicle model, number of pax, preferred date. When you pick up the chat, you can quote straight away.
Staff time goes to the conversations that need a person
Complaints, custom quotes, negotiations and anything sensitive still need you. The goal is not to remove people from customer service. It is to stop spending their day retyping your opening hours.
Language is where you should test hardest
Malaysian customers write in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mandarin and Tamil, and often mix them in one message. Before trusting any AI with your customers, send it ten real messages written the way your customers actually write. See serving four languages without hiring four people.
Check what switching on changes
Turning on Meta Business Agent in the app disables greeting and away messages and disconnects linked devices. None of this is a reason not to use it, but do not discover it on your busiest day of the week.
Meta Business Agent vs a dedicated WhatsApp AI assistant
These are two different ways to put AI into customer chats. One is built into the platform itself; the other is an independent service that runs on top of it. Neither is automatically right, and the comparison below is about how they are built, not which is better.
| Meta Business Agent | Jawabkan | |
|---|---|---|
| Provider | Meta | Sentuah Jaya Works, an independent Malaysian business. Not a Meta product |
| Approach | Built into Meta’s apps, plus a Platform version for larger businesses | Independent service that answers from the information the business provides |
| Where it answers | WhatsApp (where available), Messenger and chats from ads; being expanded to Instagram | Website chat, Telegram and LINE, plus customer-owned WhatsApp Business numbers connected through Meta’s official onboarding flow |
| Where its knowledge comes from | Your Facebook Page, past chats, website, catalogue, price lists, documents and example answers; it also learns from replies you type | The prices, services, opening hours and FAQs you provide. You check the facts before the assistant uses them |
| When it does not know | AI handoff list and notifications; you can set topics to always transfer to you. The Platform version hands off automatically when confidence is low or a customer asks for a person | Designed not to guess. The enquiry goes to the owner by email, with the recent conversation and any contact details the customer gave |
| Languages | Meta says it replies in customers’ local languages; its Help Center says not all languages are supported yet | Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin, including mixed BM-English messages |
| Availability | “Limited countries to select businesses” (WhatsApp Help Center), with a waitlist | Malaysian businesses. Website chat, Telegram and LINE work now |
| Setup | Self-serve in the WhatsApp Business app | Included in the plan: you describe your business on your own setup page and check the facts |
| Pricing | App: free to start (June 2026); Meta One business plans from US$14.99/month add more access; varies by region. Platform: US$2 per million tokens | RM199/month for 1,000 conversations, or RM399/month for 2,500. No setup fee, no lock-in. SST excluded where applicable. On WhatsApp, Meta’s messaging fees are passed on at cost |
Our view on the real difference. A native agent is convenient: it lives in the app you already use and can learn from your chat history and Facebook presence without extra setup. In return, Meta decides the features, the rollout, the languages and the pricing, and those differ by country and account.
An independent service does something narrower. It treats your business information as the product: what the assistant is allowed to say is exactly what you have given it and checked. Jawabkan connects each customer’s own WhatsApp Business number through Meta’s official onboarding flow, rather than using QR-code automation.
Where Jawabkan fits
Jawabkan was built for one specific situation: a Malaysian SME owner with a business number who answers the same messages all day. “How much?” “Open today?” “Got stock?” “Where are you?” “What services do you provide?” “Can I book?” “Do you deliver?”
Your business knowledge becomes the assistant
You tell Jawabkan your prices, services, opening hours and the answers to your common questions, then check those facts before the assistant uses them. When a price changes, send us the new list (a photo of a handwritten note is fine) and we update it as part of the subscription.
It is designed not to invent answers
If the answer is not in what you have provided, the assistant does not estimate, infer or improvise. “Got stock?” gets a real answer only if you have given it current stock information, and “Can I book?” works the same way. When the answer is not there, the enquiry is handed to you by email, with the recent conversation and any contact details the customer gave, so the customer does not have to repeat themselves. We explain the reasoning in knowing when an AI should stop and get a human.
It uses the official route, and is honest about the wait
Jawabkan’s WhatsApp service is built on Meta’s official WhatsApp Business Platform, not on QR-code tools that drive an ordinary WhatsApp account, which are a common reason business numbers get banned (here is why). Connecting to your WhatsApp Business number is waiting on Meta’s approval of Jawabkan as a provider, and we do not promise a date. In the meantime, the same assistant answers on your website, Telegram and LINE.
If you need AI replies on WhatsApp this week, check what is already available to your account, including Meta Business Agent.
You can test Jawabkan yourself with a few of your own prices and hours, for up to 10 questions, with no payment details. Pricing is published: RM199 or RM399 a month, no setup fee and no lock-in.
Should your business use Meta Business Agent or a dedicated solution?
We will not choose for you. The honest answer depends on your business and on what Meta has made available to your account. These criteria may help.
A native Meta solution may suit you if:
- you want AI that lives inside the WhatsApp Business app you already use
- the features you need are actually available to your account (check the Tools tab)
- you are comfortable with your chats being used to improve AI at Meta, and with the app changes described above
- your customers mostly write in a language Meta supports well for your number
- your needs fit what the agent does today, not what it may do later
A dedicated solution may suit you if:
- you want the assistant to answer strictly from information you have given it and checked
- you want a service built around Malaysian SMEs and how their customers write
- you would rather have setup and updates handled for you than configure an agent yourself
- you want a specific, predictable way of handling questions the assistant cannot answer
- you want your business information structured and maintained in one place you control
Questions to ask any option, including us:
- Where do its answers come from? Can I see everything it knows, and correct it?
- What happens when it does not know? Does it hand over, or does it guess?
- How does it handle Bahasa Malaysia and mixed-language messages? Test with your own customers’ wording.
- What changes on my existing WhatsApp setup? Greeting messages, linked devices, broadcasts.
- What happens to my customers’ messages? Read the data terms.
- What will it cost at my real monthly volume?
- Does it use Meta’s official platform, or a QR-code workaround that puts your number at risk?
For a longer checklist, see how to choose a WhatsApp AI chatbot in Malaysia. For how Meta’s own fees work, see WhatsApp Business API pricing in Malaysia.
The bigger shift: WhatsApp is becoming an AI customer-service channel
Our view. Meta building an AI agent into WhatsApp matters less for any single feature than for what it signals: AI replies are becoming a normal part of messaging a business. That changes a few things for Malaysian SMEs.
- Customers will expect fast answers everywhere, including from the kedai that used to reply after lunch.
- The owner’s job shifts from typing the same replies to keeping the business’s information correct and handling the conversations that need judgement.
- Accuracy becomes the differentiator. When every business can reply instantly, the one that replies correctly keeps the customer.
- Your business information becomes an asset. An accurate, up-to-date record of prices, services, hours and policies is useful to any AI you choose, now or later.
Whichever route you take, native or independent, the businesses that benefit most will be the ones whose information is right.
Frequently asked questions
What is Meta Business Agent?
Meta Business Agent is an AI service from Meta that replies to customer chats on a business’s behalf on WhatsApp and Messenger, and Meta is expanding it to Instagram. Small businesses set it up in the WhatsApp Business app, and larger businesses can use the Meta Business Agent Platform through the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Is Meta Business Agent available on WhatsApp?
Yes. It is set up from the Tools tab of the WhatsApp Business app, and businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform can use it through Meta’s APIs if their phone number is eligible. WhatsApp’s Help Center says it is currently only available in limited countries to select businesses.
Is Meta Business Agent available in Malaysia?
Meta has not published a country list in the pages we checked, so we cannot confirm it for every Malaysian business. Open the Tools tab in your WhatsApp Business app: if the AI agent option appears, it is being offered to your account. If it does not, Meta offers a waitlist.
Can Meta Business Agent answer customer questions?
Yes. WhatsApp’s Help Center says it can answer questions about business hours, location, products, services, pricing, discounts, payment and shipping, and recommend products, based on the information the business or its customers provide.
Is Meta Business Agent free?
Meta said in June 2026 that getting started is free and that access would move to paid subscriptions. In September 2026 it announced Meta One business plans starting at US$14.99 a month that include more access to Meta Business Agent, and says plans, pricing and availability may vary by region, app and account. Businesses using it through the WhatsApp Business Platform pay per token: US$2 per million tokens since 1 August 2026, about 4–5 US cents per message by Meta’s estimate.
Does Meta Business Agent support Bahasa Malaysia?
We could not confirm it. WhatsApp’s Help Center says not all languages are supported yet and that the language is determined by the business’s phone number. Test it with real customer messages in Bahasa Malaysia and mixed BM-English before relying on it.
What is the difference between Meta Business Agent and a WhatsApp chatbot?
“WhatsApp chatbot” usually means any automated replier, from fixed menu trees to AI assistants run by independent providers. Meta Business Agent is Meta’s own AI agent, built into WhatsApp. An independent AI assistant is run by a separate company on Meta’s platform, with its own approach to knowledge, handoff and pricing.
What information does an AI WhatsApp assistant need?
At minimum: your prices, products or services, opening hours, location, delivery or service areas, payment methods and the answers to your most common questions. Its answers can only be as accurate as this information, so it needs updating whenever something changes.
Can AI handle WhatsApp customer enquiries after hours?
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons businesses use it. Meta Business Agent is designed to reply around the clock, and so are independent AI assistants. Questions that need a person, such as a custom quote or a complaint, should still be handed to you to answer when you are back.
What happens when an AI does not know the answer?
It should stop and pass the conversation to a person rather than guess. Meta Business Agent has an AI handoff list and notifications, and lets you choose topics it should always transfer to you. Jawabkan hands the enquiry to the owner by email with the recent conversation and any contact details the customer gave.
Is Jawabkan a Meta product?
No. Jawabkan is an independent service from Sentuah Jaya Works, a Malaysian business. It is not made, owned or endorsed by Meta.
Does Jawabkan use the official WhatsApp Business Platform?
Yes. Jawabkan’s WhatsApp service is built on Meta’s official WhatsApp Business Platform, not on QR-code tools that drive an ordinary WhatsApp account. Answering on customers’ WhatsApp numbers is waiting on Meta’s approval of Jawabkan as a provider. Until then, the same assistant answers on website chat, Telegram and LINE.
